Suffrage Writers & Directors
The Women Writers Suffrage League
Formed in 1908 by Cicely Hamilton and Bessie Hatton, the League aimed “to obtain the vote for women on the same terms as it is or may be granted to men. Its methods are those proper to writers – the use of the pen." Women writers who joined the organisation included novelist and Women’s Freedom League founder Charlotte Despard, Violet Hunt, Alice Meynell, Marie Belloc Lowndes, Beatrica Harraden, as well as many of those below. Male writers in sympathy with the cause such as Laurence Housman and Israel Zangwill were enrolled as 'Honorary Men Associates'. The WWSL worked in close co-operation with the AFL to encourage members to write short plays for the Cause.
